Pokémon Crystal is Game Freak’s 2000 enhanced Game Boy Color re-release of Gold and Silver’s Johto campaign, the first Pokémon title to let players choose a female player character and the first to feature animated Pokémon sprites in battle rather than static images.

It also adds the Battle Tower post-game facility and a new storyline focused on the mythical Pokémon Suicune, giving the campaign more direction than Gold and Silver’s comparatively open-ended structure. As the definitive version of that generation’s story, it’s often the version longtime fans recommend first when revisiting Johto.
