Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine GENESIS

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine is Compile’s 1993 falling-block puzzle game for the Genesis, published by Sega as a Sonic-themed reskin of Compile’s own Puyo Puyo (1991). Dr. Robotnik has kidnapped the residents of Beanville and is turning them into robots, and you match falling colored beans in chains to clear them and send “garbage” beans onto an opponent’s side in competitive matches.

Beyond the visual reskin, the game keeps Puyo Puyo’s core chain-reaction mechanics intact, rewarding players who can set up large simultaneous clears rather than just matching color groups as they fall. The original Puyo Puyo character Carbuncle survives the reskin as a mascot named “Has Bean,” reacting to the player’s performance, and the game’s tight two-player versus mode made it a well-regarded puzzle title in its own right despite its franchise-crossover origins.
