About Super Mario Kart
Super Mario Kart is Nintendo’s 1992 SNES release that founded the kart-racing genre, taking eight characters from the Mario cast and putting them in go-karts across courses built around Mario-universe hazards — Bowser’s lava castle, Donkey Kong’s barrel-strewn jungle, and item-triggered chaos like turtle shells and banana peels.
Like F-Zero, it uses Mode 7 to render its pseudo-3D tracks, and it introduced the battle-mode balloon format that stuck around in the series for decades. Nearly every kart racer released since — inside and outside Nintendo’s own catalog — borrows some part of the template this game set.
