About Illusion of Gaia
Illusion of Gaia is Quintet’s action-RPG, released in Japan by Enix in November 1993 as Gaia Gensōki and in North America by Nintendo in September 1994, directed by Masaya Hashimoto. You play Will, a boy who can channel the spirits of past civilizations while visiting ancient ruins around the world investigating a mysterious comet’s approach.
Combat plays out in real time rather than turn-based menus, closer to an action game than a traditional JRPG, while the story leans unusually dark and philosophical for a 16-bit console release, exploring themes of mortality and sacrifice. It’s the middle entry in Quintet’s loosely connected “Soul Blazer trilogy” (alongside Soul Blazer and Terranigma), sharing thematic DNA but no direct continuity between the three.
