About Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior is Enix’s 1986 role-playing game, released in Japan as Dragon Quest and renamed for its 1989 North American release due to an unrelated trademark conflict. A lone hero descended from a legendary warrior sets out solo — no party members join at any point — to rescue a kidnapped princess and defeat the Dragonlord threatening the kingdom.
Designed by Yuji Horii with character art by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, it adapted PC role-playing conventions — random encounters, experience-based leveling, town-and-dungeon exploration — into a simplified form built for console hardware and a broader audience. It’s widely credited as the game that established the console RPG as a mainstream Japanese genre, directly inspiring the format Final Fantasy and its own many sequels built on afterward.
