About Pac-Mania

Pac-Mania is Sculptured Software’s 1990 NES adaptation of Namco’s 1987 arcade original, published in the West by Tengen as an unlicensed cartridge. The arcade version, directed by original Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani, reimagined the classic maze-chase in an oblique isometric perspective with Pac-Man able to jump over pursuing ghosts for the first time in the series.

That jump mechanic, combined with the tilted camera angle that keeps Pac-Man centered while the maze scrolls around him, gave the formula a genuinely new dimension of timing and spatial judgment beyond simple pellet-collecting and ghost evasion. As Tengen’s unlicensed NES port of a fairly late-era arcade Pac-Man spin-off, it’s a less commonly seen entry in the character’s console history than the original Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man ports.
