About Donkey Kong (Game Boy)
Donkey Kong is Nintendo’s 1994 Game Boy release, using the original 1981 arcade game’s four stages as an opening act before expanding into over 90 additional puzzle-platforming levels built around Mario’s expanded moveset — handstands, backflips, and the ability to pick up and throw Donkey Kong himself once cornered.
That shift from a short arcade-style challenge into a full puzzle-platformer, sometimes referred to separately as “Donkey Kong ’94,” made it closer in spirit to a Mario vs. Donkey Kong-style puzzle game than a straight remake, and its handheld-native level design and moveset went on to directly influence the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series Nintendo built afterward.
