Excitebike is Nintendo’s 1984 motocross racer, directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and one of the earliest Nintendo-developed NES titles, releasing alongside the console’s Japanese launch. You race a dirt bike across ramps and obstacles, managing an engine-heat gauge that builds up during boosts and forces you to ease off before the engine overheats and stalls.
Its built-in track editor — letting players design and save their own custom courses — was an unusually early example of user-generated content on a console, well ahead of when that kind of feature became common. Its physics-driven jump timing and heat-management mechanic gave it more depth than a typical straight-line racer of the period.
