Metal Slug X is SNK’s 1999 rebalanced re-release of Metal Slug 2, built specifically to fix the slowdown that plagued the original when the Neo Geo hardware struggled with its busiest sprite-heavy sequences. Beyond the performance fixes, it adjusts some enemy placement, adds a couple of new weapons, and tweaks stage details rather than reworking the game wholesale.

Releasing roughly a year after Metal Slug 2, it’s generally considered the more polished, playable way to experience that game’s content, at the cost of losing some of the chaotic, overloaded intensity that made the original both memorable and technically strained. Both versions remain closely compared by longtime series fans as two takes on the same core game.
