About Mega Man II

Mega Man II, released on Game Boy in 1991, continues the handheld series’ pattern of remixing NES Robot Masters rather than porting a single mainline game wholesale — this time pulling four bosses from Mega Man 2 (Metal Man, Air Man, Bubble Man, Quick Man, chosen from the NES game’s cast of eight) and pairing them with four entirely new Robot Masters created specifically for this entry.

Among the new bosses, Quint stands out for series-lore reasons: he’s later revealed to be a corrupted, time-displaced version of Mega Man himself, brought back from a future where Dr. Wily has taken over — one of the odder plot threads in the classic series, and one that wouldn’t have existed without this specific Game Boy spinoff being treated as more than a simple rehash.

Like its predecessor, it runs on original Game Boy Robot Master AI and level design rather than reused NES stage layouts, making the four Game Boy Mega Man games a genuinely separate, parallel continuity of sorts rather than straightforward ports — a distinction that matters to long-time fans of the series’ dense internal lore.
