About Tetris

Tetris on the Game Boy is a 1989 port of Alexey Pajitnov's puzzle game, and it's the version most people who grew up with the console actually remember — Nintendo bundled it with the hardware in most regions instead of Super Mario Land, betting correctly that a game anyone could pick up in ten seconds would sell more consoles than a platformer.

The rules haven’t changed in the decades since: seven tetromino shapes fall one at a time into a well, and clearing a full horizontal line removes it and speeds up the drop rate. What made the Game Boy version specifically influential wasn’t the mechanics — it was proving that portable gaming didn’t need flashy graphics to be genuinely compelling, on a screen with four shades of green and no backlight.

It also shipped with a two-player link cable mode, competitive Tetris a decade before it became an esport, which is part of why this specific version is still cited as one of the most important puzzle games ever released.
