About Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s 1991 mascot platformer, built by the newly formed Sonic Team to give the Genesis a system-seller that could compete directly with Nintendo’s Mario. You run and spin-dash through fast, loop-filled stages as Sonic, collecting rings as a buffer against damage and racing to stop Dr. Robotnik from turning local wildlife into robots.

Its emphasis on speed — long horizontal stages designed to be blown through at a sprint, with alternate high routes for players skilled enough to keep momentum — was a deliberate contrast to Mario’s more deliberate pacing, and became the character’s defining trait across the many sequels and spin-offs that followed. It’s widely credited with helping the Genesis compete seriously against the SNES in North America.
