Golden Axe II GENESIS
About Golden Axe II
Golden Axe II is Sega’s 1991 beat-’em-up sequel, released in Japan that December and North America in January 1992, designed by Kazuma Fujii. It continues the fantasy hack-and-slash formula of the original Golden Axe, with returning warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead fighting through a new campaign against a resurrected threat to the kingdom of Yuria.
It refines rather than overhauls the original’s combat, tuning enemy variety, magic spell effects, and the mountable beast creatures players can commandeer mid-fight for extra attacks. Releasing early in the Genesis’s life as an established franchise sequel rather than a new IP, it helped cement Golden Axe as one of Sega’s signature beat-’em-up series alongside Streets of Rage.
