About EarthBound

EarthBound is Nintendo’s 1994 RPG, directed by Shigesato Itoi and set in a present-day, suburban American-style world rather than the medieval fantasy settings typical of the genre. A boy named Ness and his friends fight off an alien invasion using baseball bats, frying pans, and psychic abilities instead of swords and magic.

Its deadpan humor, contemporary setting, and willingness to undercut typical RPG tropes made it stand apart from its Japanese-fantasy-styled contemporaries, though it sold poorly in North America on release, partly due to marketing that leaned into self-deprecating “This game stinks” jokes. It’s since developed a substantial cult following and is now widely regarded as one of the SNES’s most distinctive RPGs.
