About Concentration Room

Concentration Room is a card-matching game for the NES released in 2010 by Damian Yerrick, a longtime NESdev community programmer also known for Thwaite and the NES port of robotfindskitten. The game frames its memory-matching mechanic inside a short story: the player has been quarantined after a lab neurotoxin leak and plays a matching game to work the toxin out of their system.

The table holds 10, 20, 36, 52, or 72 face-down cards depending on difficulty. Flip two cards; if their emblems match, you keep the pair, otherwise they flip back over. Four modes are included: a 1-Player Story mode against a series of opponents, 1-Player Solitaire against the clock, a pass-the-controller 2-Player mode, and a Vs. CPU mode.

Yerrick built the game as a from-scratch alternative to GameTek’s two licensed NES concentration games (I Can Remember and Classic Concentration), citing their clunky controls and smaller card counts. Concentration Room is free software, released under the GNU General Public License v3, with the compiled ROM distributable without also shipping source code under an explicit exception in the license text.
