Donkey Kong Land 2 GAMEBOY
About Donkey Kong Land 2
Donkey Kong Land 2, released in 1996, is the handheld counterpart to Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest on the SNES — not a direct port, but an original set of levels built around the same premise and cast, with Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong taking the lead role after Donkey Kong himself is kidnapped by Kaptain K. Rool’s pirate crew.
It carries over Dixie’s signature helicopter-spin hover, which changes the platforming rhythm noticeably from the first Donkey Kong Land’s more grounded jumping, and the game leans harder into pirate-ship, ghost-town, and hive-themed level gimmicks than its predecessor did. Team-up throws between the two Kongs and animal-buddy stages (with Rambi, Squawks, and others) return from the SNES game, adapted to the smaller screen.
Critically, it’s often cited as the strongest of the three Game Boy Donkey Kong Land games precisely because it inherits Diddy’s Kong Quest’s reputation as the high point of the SNES trilogy — sharper level design and a tighter difficulty curve than the original Donkey Kong Land, even without literally reusing any of that game’s levels.
