Darius II GENESIS
About Darius II
Darius II is Taito’s horizontally scrolling shoot-’em-up, released to arcades in 1989 and ported to the Genesis in 1990 under the retitled name Sagaia. You pilot a fish-shaped starfighter through a branching series of stages, choosing between multiple paths after each checkpoint on the way to one of several possible bosses and endings.
Its aquatic-themed mechanical bosses, each fashioned after a different sea creature, carried over from the original Darius as a signature visual identity for the series. The Genesis port’s branching-path structure and boss variety gave it more replay incentive than a typical linear shoot-’em-up of the era, encouraging repeated playthroughs to see different routes and endings.
