About Shooter games
The genre began in the arcade with Space Invaders and Galaga, then evolved into scrolling shooters like Gradius with its power-up bar, and 1942 with its World War II setting. Later arcade games like Raiden and Cave's DoDonPachi filled the screen with bullets and created the bullet hell style.
On foot, run-and-gun games like Contra, Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes are some of the best co-op games of the era. The Genesis was a particular favorite for shooters, with titles like Thunder Force II and Truxton. If you like fast reflexes, also see our arcade collection.
