Zero Wing GENESIS
About Zero Wing
Zero Wing is Toaplan’s 1989 horizontal shoot-’em-up, ported to the Genesis in 1991 by Sega. You pilot the ZIG fighter against the Cranassian Empire, using a tractor beam to grab enemy ships and either fling them at other enemies or hold them as a shield — a mechanic distinct from the era’s usual straightforward gun-and-bomb shooter design.
The Genesis version is best known today less for its gameplay than for its opening cutscene’s English localization, whose broken phrasing (“All your base are belong to us”) went on to become one of the earliest widely-spread internet memes years after the game’s original release, long outliving the game’s own commercial footprint.
