About Top Gear

Top Gear is Gremlin Graphics’ 1992 arcade-style racer, published by Kemco for the SNES and known in Japan as Top Racer. You race across a cross-country tour of numbered stages, competing against AI drivers while managing a fuel gauge and periodic pit stops for repairs and refueling between checkpoints.

Its Mode 7-scaled pseudo-3D road and simultaneous two-player split-screen support made it one of the more technically ambitious racers on the SNES near its 1992 launch window, arriving the same generation as the system’s own F-Zero. It spawned a loosely connected series of sequels, including Top Gear 2 and Top Gear 3000, none of which are direct narrative follow-ups.
