About Thwaite
Thwaite is a missile-defense game for the NES by Damian Yerrick, first released in 2011 and updated through 2018. Missiles fall from the sky toward a small town, and the player fires interceptor fireworks to shoot them down before they land — a direct homage to Dave Theurer’s 1980 Atari arcade game Missile Command, reframed with a New Year’s-fireworks setting instead of a Cold War one.
The game supports the standard NES controller or a Super NES Mouse (via an SNES-to-NES controller adapter or an FC Twin famiclone) for more precise targeting, and adjusts its game and music speed automatically depending on whether it detects an NTSC or PAL console. The soundtrack mixes original compositions with an arrangement of Beethoven.
Thwaite is free software, released under the GNU General Public License v3 or later, with source code publicly available. A small number of source files not specific to the game use a more permissive zlib-style license.
