Ristar GENESIS
About Ristar
Ristar is Sega’s 1995 platformer, developed by the same internal team behind Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but built around a deliberately different core mechanic — instead of running and jumping, the star-shaped hero Ristar grabs enemies and terrain with his stretchable arms, pulling himself toward handholds or yanking foes in for a headbutt attack.
That grab-based traversal made its level design fundamentally different from Sega’s speed-focused Sonic games, favoring precise reach-and-pull platforming over momentum. Releasing in 1995, well after the Genesis’s commercial peak and competing against the arrival of the Saturn and PlayStation, it sold modestly at the time but has since been reassessed as one of the system’s most creatively distinct platformers.
