X-Men vs. Street Fighter is Capcom’s 1996 fighter, the first entry in what became the studio’s long-running “Vs.” crossover series, pitting Marvel’s X-Men roster against Street Fighter’s cast for the first time. It introduces tag-team battles where each player selects two fighters and can swap between them mid-match, plus a shared Cross Over combo move that lets tagged-out partners jump in for a coordinated attack.
Running on Capcom’s CPS-2 hardware, its two-on-two structure and character-crossover premise proved popular enough to launch a full lineage of sequels — Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and beyond — that continued combining Capcom and Marvel characters for years afterward, making this the foundational entry in one of fighting gaming’s most enduring crossover franchises.
