About Phantasy Star II

Phantasy Star II is Sega’s RPG sequel, released in Japan in 1989 and North America/Europe in 1990, with Rieko Kodama handling graphics design and Yuji Naka programming — the pairing now credited as the series’ co-creators. Set a thousand years after the original Phantasy Star, it follows a new protagonist, Rolf, investigating malfunctions in the ruling AI Mother Brain across the Algo star system’s terraformed planets.

It replaced the first game’s dungeon-crawling first-person mazes with an overhead map view and was one of the earliest console RPGs to feature a large recruitable party of distinct characters with individual classes and abilities. Its unusually somber, morally ambiguous story and technology-versus-nature themes stood apart from typical fantasy RPG plots of the era, and it’s often cited as one of the Genesis’s most significant early RPGs.
