About Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is Sega’s 1994 sequel, developed under time pressure that led Sega to split the originally planned single game into two releases — this game and its direct continuation, Sonic & Knuckles, connectable via the “Lock-On” cartridge slot. It introduces Knuckles the Echidna as a rival character who sabotages Sonic and Tails throughout the story before his own role is explained.

It adds a save feature — a first for the mainline series — along with elemental shield power-ups granting fire, water, and electric abilities beyond simple protection. Its darker, more atmospheric level design and Michael Jackson’s uncredited involvement in parts of the soundtrack are frequently cited by longtime fans as marking a tonal high point for the Genesis Sonic games.
