About Toki

Toki is TAD Corporation’s arcade platformer, released in Japan on December 8, 1989 as JuJu Densetsu (Legend of JuJu) and in North America through publisher Fabtek. You play Toki, a tribal chief transformed into an ape by an evil wizard, spitting energy balls from his mouth to fight through jungle stages toward breaking the curse and rescuing his kidnapped fiancée.

The project began when a freelance artist pitched TAD Corporation character designs for a comedic monkey hero, which the studio — founded by former Data East staff — built an entire arcade game around. Its blend of platforming and shooting mechanics, combined with its offbeat cursed-ape premise, made it distinct from the more straightforward run-and-gun games common in arcades at the time, and it was later ported to numerous home consoles and computers.
